During a routine press conference on October 18, 2023, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning addressed several questions from reporters.

When asked about Israel’s claim that it had killed Hamas leader Sinwar, Mao responded, “We have noted the relevant reports. China believes that the immediate priority is the comprehensive and effective implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, protect civilians, ensure humanitarian assistance, and prevent further escalation of the conflict.”

Another reporter inquired about the impact of Sinwar’s death on the “Beijing Declaration” signed by 14 Palestinian factions. Mao stated, “China has consistently supported internal reconciliation among the Palestinian factions, seeing it as a crucial step towards resolving the Palestinian issue and achieving peace and stability in the Middle East based on the two-state solution. Regardless of changing circumstances, Palestinian groups should strengthen their unity, and the international community should provide steadfast support. China is willing to work together with all relevant parties to continue making unremitting efforts for this cause.”
