Ukraine’s prosecutor general resigned after the scandal was exposed
On October 22, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin announced his resignation, taking responsibility for the recent revelations regarding numerous officials evading military service.
Reports indicate that under Kostin’s oversight, several dozen officials reportedly abused their power to obtain disability status to escape conscription. In response, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine convened to address corruption and the exploitation of loopholes in the conscription process. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of the Prosecutor General being held politically accountable for issues within the prosecution service.
Following the meeting, Kostin declared his resignation, stating that the cases of fraudulent disability diagnoses were “clearly unethical.” He concurred with Zelensky’s stance on the necessity of personal responsibility, asserting that stepping down as Prosecutor General was the right course of action in light of the circumstances.
