Shooting in Manhattan Chinatown leaves 1 dead and 1 injured
On the evening of October 12, a shooting incident occurred on Madison Street, near Manhattan’s Chinatown, during the bustling rush hour, just a block away from the NYPD headquarters. The incident resulted in one fatality and one injury, with the suspect still on the loose. Following the shooting, a significant number of police officers were dispatched from the headquarters and other precincts to enhance patrols in the community.
According to police reports, the shooting took place around 7:14 PM near the intersection of Madison Street and St. James Place. However, restaurant owners in the area indicated that the actual incident occurred deeper within the neighborhood rather than directly at the intersection. Mr. Li, a local resident, reported hearing what sounded like a firecracker, followed by the sight of police cordoning off an area between Catherine Street and Oliver Street. A store owner near the intersection of Madison and Catherine Streets confirmed that the police presence was more pronounced closer to Catherine Street.
As of the latest updates, a thorough investigation has revealed that there are two bus stops on the south side of the street where the shooting took place, and the sidewalk between these stops still bears a significant amount of blood, indicating the site of the incident.
When officers from the fifth precinct arrived at the scene, they found two men with gunshot wounds — one shot in the neck and the other in the lower body. Emergency responders quickly transported the victims to Bellevue Hospital. The man with the neck injury was later admitted to the ICU but unfortunately succumbed to his wounds, while the other victim’s condition stabilized, with no immediate life-threatening concerns. The police have yet to identify the deceased, but they confirmed that the surviving victim is 30 years old. Notably, authorities stated that neither victim was of Asian descent.
As this investigation continues, the police have not released any details regarding the identity of the fleeing suspect. The location of the shooting is alarmingly close to the NYPD headquarters, leading to an increased police presence in the area on the following day. Officers on duty shared that some were temporarily reassigned from the Bronx and that others typically work out of the headquarters but were also sent to the streets to bolster the response.
