The inaugural People’s Art Forum and the “Art for the People” Art Exhibition recently took place at Renmin University of China, drawing participation from various universities, research institutions, and cultural organizations nationwide. A key highlight of the event was the launch of the “Initiative for Building an Independent Knowledge System in Chinese Art Studies.”
During the opening ceremony, renowned performing artist Tian Hua, who holds the National Honorary Title of “People’s Artist,” delivered a poignant video address. She stressed the necessity for art to serve the people and champion justice, while encouraging young artists to embrace and advance the creative philosophy of “art for the people.”
Zhu Di, a leader within the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, spoke to the enduring dedication of generations of artists who have focused their work on the needs and experiences of the people. He praised their genuine commitment, which is evident in their exceptional creative outputs. Zhu articulated that this commitment has significantly shaped the spirit and character of socialist literature and art, establishing the foundation of contemporary Chinese artistic development and reflecting the unique values sought by today’s artists.
Professor Lin Shangli, President of Renmin University, explained that the People’s Art Forum aims to establish a high-level, open, and inclusive platform for academic dialogue. He emphasized the goal of fostering collaboration among academia, research institutions, and cultural organizations to facilitate meaningful discussions on contemporary and humanistic values in art, while also advocating for the development of an independent knowledge system in Chinese art studies.
The event also marked the unveiling of the “Initiative for Building an Independent Knowledge System in Chinese Art Studies,” with support from several institutions, including the China Academy of Art and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. This initiative calls for an expedited development of a self-sufficient knowledge system in Chinese art, aiming to contribute to the establishment of a strong educational and cultural nation and to support the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation through a modern Chinese lens.
Participants were encouraged to become pioneers who maintain a people’s perspective, reach for artistic heights, engage actively with contemporary issues, lead cultural exchanges, and serve as role models in the cultivation of culture.
Leading up to October 3rd, coinciding with the forum, three themed academic discussions under the banner “Art for the People” took place, allowing experts and scholars to engage in deep conversations about the theoretical foundations, creative practices, and critical dissemination of this artistic philosophy. Additionally, the first “Art for the People” exhibition opened, featuring a diverse range of artworks, including oil paintings, traditional Chinese paintings, watercolors, and sculptures.
