In a recent interview on October 8, South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-kyun shared his concerns regarding the potential deployment of North Korean regular armed forces to Ukraine in support of Russia. This statement underscores a worsening trend in military cooperation between the two nations.

Minister Kim’s remarks follow a significant summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin back in June, where they formalized their alliance with a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty.” This agreement includes a clause stipulating that if either country faces invasion or war, the other is required to provide military assistance.

During a parliamentary audit meeting, Minister Kim informed lawmakers that the possibility of North Korean military deployment to Ukraine is quite high, given the established military alliance between North Korea and Russia.

Additionally, reports have emerged indicating that six officers from the North Korean People’s Army were killed in a Ukrainian airstrike in the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk, with three more injured. These events bolster the minister’s concerns about the evolving military dynamic between North Korea and Russia.
