Mainz supporters held banners during their team’s Bundesliga game against Leipzig – a Red Bull-backed club – in which they addressed their former hero.
“Have you forgotten everything we gave you?” asked one huge banner behind one of the goals, referring to Klopp’s tearful farewell speech when he left the club after 18 years as a player and coach in 2008.

Red Bull announced on 9 October that Klopp will become its head of global soccer from January, overseeing its international network of clubs, including Leipzig, Austrian team Salzburg, New York Red Bulls, Bragantino in Brazil and Omiya Ardija in Japan. Red Bull also has a minority stake in the Championship club Leeds, while it is set to become a minority stakeholder in French second-division club Paris FC. After leaving Mainz in 2008, Klopp enjoyed successful coaching spells at Borussia Dortmund, then Liverpool, ending the latter’s 30-year wait to be English champions. Leipzig ran out 2-0 winners in Mainz after first-half goals from Xavi Simons and Willi Orbán.
Harry Kane scored a hat-trick to steer Bayern Munich to a 4-0 victory over visiting Stuttgart, snapping their three-game winless run across all competitions and keeping Bayern top of the Bundesliga. Kane, who had missed a golden chance in front of goal in the 51st minute, broke the deadlock six minutes later, rifling in from outside the box.
The England striker then drilled in following a goalmouth scramble on the hour. He secured his hat-trick with his eighth league goal of the season after João Palhinha’s shot was blocked, with the substitute Kingsley Coman curling in Bayern’s fourth late on.

Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior scored in each half to give Real Madrid a hard-fought 2-1 win at Celta Vigo in La Liga. Mbappé gave Madrid the lead with a brilliant strike from long range in the 20th minute. However, the Swedish forward Williot Swedberg equalised for the home side with a first-touch effort from a counterattack after half-time.
Madrid went ahead again when the substitute Luka Modric played Vinícius through and the Brazilian took the ball past the goalkeeper before finishing in the 66th minute. Real are second in the La Liga standings on 24 points, level with leaders Barcelona who have a game in hand and host Sevilla on Sunday.
