Don Seeks Inclusion of Monotechnics as Beneficiaries of TETFund to Drive Research, Devt
In a recent interview in Ibadan, Dr. Ibrahim Lawal, the Provost of the Federal College of Forestry, emphasized the necessity of including monotechnics as beneficiaries of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). This inclusion, he argues, could significantly support research and infrastructure development across the nation.
Speaking to journalists during the 85th anniversary celebrations of the college and the combined convocation ceremony for 76th to 83rd graduations, Dr. Lawal expressed concern over the ongoing exclusion of monotechnics from TETFund benefits. He believes that adequate funding could potentially resolve many challenges facing Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
“We’ve designed specific courses aimed at addressing terminal ailments and tackling environmental issues. Introducing programs in Bio-Science, Indigenous Knowledge Science, and Bio-Technology is timely. These will enable us to train students on the effective use of herbal medicine,” Dr. Lawal explained.
He further urged the federal government to recognize monotechnics as part of the TETFund initiative, stating, “Including monotechnics would greatly enhance educational opportunities for our children. Our college is a key player in addressing environmental challenges in Nigeria.”
Dr. Lawal highlighted the college’s focus on educating students about the significance of herbal medicine and proper societal care. He noted that further research in herbal medicine could provide a viable alternative to the high costs associated with conventional medications.
“We are preparing students to confront environmental challenges and explore solutions for climate change, aiming to make issues like flooding and deforestation relics of the past,” he added.
Regarding the forthcoming convocation, Dr. Lawal announced that former President Olusegun Obasanjo—a dedicated advocate for forestry—will deliver the anniversary lecture entitled, “85th Year of Nurturing Nature; The Legacy and Future of Forestry Education in Nigeria.” Additionally, notable alumni will be recognized with the Alumnus Award.
He mentioned that the six-day celebration, which began with a Jumat service, includes department exhibitions and a novelty match, culminating in a convocation and fundraising event on Thursday, October 24.
“This milestone of 85 years is a genuine cause for celebration. We anticipate welcoming numerous esteemed personalities, environmental advocates, and individuals who understand the critical importance of conserving our forests. After all, as the saying goes, ‘when the last tree dies, the last man on earth dies as well,’” Dr. Lawal remarked.
