A long line of attendees formed at the “2024 Silver Hair and Senior Living Expo,” held at the Overseas Chinese Cultural and Educational Service Center in Los Angeles on October 26. Despite the event starting at 10 a.m., many people arrived before 9 a.m. to secure their spots, with the queue extending to the parking lot.
The organizers prepared 500 gift bags for the first attendees, along with a range of activities including free health screenings, health seminars, and booths from 20 healthcare vendors. There was also a grand raffle featuring valuable prizes exceeding a thousand dollars. Everyone present had the opportunity to participate in the raffles held between each seminar, allowing attendees to gain health knowledge and leave with numerous gifts.
According to Yujin Yu, President of the World Journal, the purpose of the event was to help attendees better understand and enjoy essential benefits and services. The publication invited medical experts from various fields to present seminars, sharing the latest information, such as significant changes to the federal Medicare program this year. New limits were placed on out-of-pocket prescription drug costs, and starting in 2026, direct negotiations with pharmaceutical companies can take place. Attendees also learned that the cap on Plan B will decrease in 2025, emphasizing the need to ensure existing prescription drug coverage is maintained to protect their benefits. The event aimed to show seniors that the community cares and is there to support them by consolidating resources and services.
Since its inception in 2019, this marked the fifth year the World Journal held the “Silver Hair and Senior Living Expo.” The event featured a free health check station, exclusive to October 26, where participants could monitor their blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), mental health, and cognitive function, providing them with a thorough understanding of their health status.
Experts from various fields, including medical, insurance, finance, and social services, gathered on-site to conduct seven professional seminars. Between each seminar, attendees could participate in prize draws featuring items such as Prince of Peace mushroom capsules, American ginseng slices, ginseng tea sets, as well as a $50 gift card for 99 Ranch Market provided by USC Arcadia Hospital, and a variety of kitchen appliances, including the Joyoung multifunctional soy milk maker, multifunctional cooking pot, and food processor, with a total prize value exceeding a thousand dollars.
Li Jiayi, the quality director at the Corner Voice, noted that they provided screenings for blood pressure and other health metrics, and individuals receiving flu shots would receive a $15 Target gift card.
El Monte Mayor Jessica Ancona attended the event and expressed gratitude towards the World Journal for organizing such meaningful events in the city for several years. As a leading Chinese media outlet in Southern California, the publication not only delivers news but also provides community services, keeping local residents informed about vital health and insurance information. This information is particularly beneficial for seniors, and she thanked Corner Voice for offering complimentary health screenings that support their well-being.
The event also featured taste samples of seasoning soy sauce sponsored by Lee Kum Kee.
