The 2024 China-Laos Fishery Administration Joint Law Enforcement and Breeding and Release Activities will be held

On October 15, a reporter from China News Service learned that the joint law enforcement and fish stocking activity for 2024 between China and Laos took place in Jinghong City, Xishuangbanna Prefecture, Yunnan Province.

The theme of this event was “Sharing the Same River, Protecting Our Mother River,” during which a total of 770,000 fish fry, including the Silvery Sucker, Large-scaled Four-bearded Catfish, and Chinese Spotted Barbel, were released into the water. Following the release, representatives from both countries patrolled the river aboard law enforcement boats.

The Lancang-Mekong River stretches 4,900 kilometers and is one of the world’s most biodiverse rivers for freshwater species. China and Laos have actively implemented the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation framework, engaging in joint law enforcement and fish stocking activities for ten consecutive years, totaling 16 events. Over this period, they have released 4.235 million indigenous fish fry, such as Silvery Suckers, Large-scaled Four-bearded Catfish, and Chinese Spotted Barbel, significantly contributing to the protection and restoration of aquatic biodiversity in the Lancang-Mekong river basin.

The event was attended by representatives from relevant departments of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Yunnan Province, and Xishuangbanna Prefecture, as well as those from Laos, including officials from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Department of Agriculture and Forestry in Nanta Province, Laotian students, and environmental volunteers from Xishuangbanna.
