Jude Law reminisced about his memorable days exploring San Francisco with Ethan Hawke, expressing a lasting affection for those experiences. He described the city as an integral part of a beautiful world.

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Law recalled his first visit to San Francisco while filming the sci-fi movie “Gattaca” in 1997, where he co-starred with Hawke. “We always had a great time,” he shared. “I remember Ethan and I going into the city to find bookstores. We both love literature and music.”

During his appearance at the Mill Valley Film Festival on Sunday, October 13, Law revealed, “We also loved drinking here.”

At 51 years old, Law returned to the Bay Area as the honoree of the 47th Mill Valley Film Festival. He participated in a Q&A session at the Smith Rafael Film Center, hosted by the festival’s program director, Zoë Elton. Afterward, Mark Fishkin, the festival’s founder and executive director, presented him with the coveted Mill Valley Film Festival Award.

“Gattaca” has become a classic, directed by Andrew Niccol, and part of it was filmed at the Marin County Civic Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Law mentioned that this film marked a turning point in his acting career. When production moved from Los Angeles to the Bay Area, he and Hawke, who had already developed a strong rapport, decided to drive up the Pacific Coast Highway together.

“I remember it was my first time on that incredibly beautiful coastal highway all the way to San Francisco,” Law recalled. “Just like today, it was a short drive from my hotel to here, but the stunning scenery still left me in awe. San Francisco truly is a part of a beautiful world.”

This wasn’t Law’s only experience in San Francisco. He played a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle in Steven Soderbergh’s film “Contagion” (2011), with some scenes shot at the Chronicle’s office near Fifth and Mission streets. He even recalled sneaking into the newsroom one Sunday morning to film at the messiest desk he could find.
