**Interview with Event Participants at the “Old House New Voice” Concert in Fuzhou**

On October 19th, the historic streets of Sanfang Qixiang in Fuzhou came alive with music during the “Old House New Voice” original song concert, held at the Fuzhou Urban Reception Hall. As we walked through the charming alleys, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. It reminded me of my childhood, filled with the sweet scent of flowers and the gentle sway of a horse lantern in my hand.

The atmosphere was electric as groups of performers took to the stage, showcasing a range of musical styles from a cappella to traditional Nanyin, as well as guitar performances. This concert celebrated the theme of “Old House,” shining a spotlight on the stories and values inherent in Fujian’s traditional architecture, inviting the audience to experience the unique allure of these ancient homes through music.

I spoke with Sun Jinmei, the president of the Fujian Peking Opera Theatre and a recipient of the Plum Blossom National Drama Award, who performed a debut Peking opera piece titled “Huiyin, the Good Daughter of Fuzhou.” She shared her inspiration for the song, stating, “This piece reflects the life and achievements of Lin Huiyin, a remarkable woman from Fuzhou. By blending classical Peking opera with modern musical elements, we highlight her extraordinary contributions and her poetic life, celebrating her talents and virtues.”

The concert featured ten outstanding songs that emerged from a song collection event organized by the Fujian Provincial Art Museum. The pieces not only displayed the architectural beauty of the “Old Houses” but also delved deep into the rich cultural and historical narratives that these sites embody.

During the event, leaders and guests recognized the talented musicians behind these pieces, presenting them with honors and capturing memorable moments together. Among the recognized works was “Min-Tai Intangible Cultural Heritage Shared Together,” written by Luo Chunzhen, a descendant of Taiwanese residents and an inheritor of the South Nanyin heritage, with music composed by her mentor, Zhuo Shengxiang. Luo expressed her passion for the art, saying, “The lyrics speak of our shared heritage, emphasizing the need to nurture and honor our cultural roots. It reflects my dedication to preserving and promoting the South Nanyin tradition.”

This concert was organized under the guidance of the Fujian Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, with support from the Fujian Provincial Art Museum, Fujian Song and Dance Theatre, and the People’s Government of Gulou District in Fuzhou. As part of Fujian’s popular community singing series, the event has garnered significant public interest, attracting over 9 million views on various platforms by the end of the night.

The response from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, cementing the concert’s place as a cherished event in celebrating Fujian’s cultural heritage through music.
