A Terrifying Incident: Girl Left in a Coma After Falling from an E-Bike and Sustaining Injuries from a Hair Claw
In a shocking accident earlier this month, a young woman in Chengdu fell from an electric bike and suffered severe injuries from her hair claw, leading to her being placed in a coma. Medical professionals are now warning against wearing hair claws during physical activities or in potentially slippery situations.
Hair claws, or “shark clips,” are a popular choice for styling long hair, but they can pose serious risks. On the eve of National Day, Mr. Hu and his girlfriend, Ms. Liu, were riding an e-bike when they tragically lost balance and fell. Ms. Liu, who was wearing a shark clip, landed on her head, resulting in a skull fracture.
When contacted by reporters on October 15, Mr. Hu revealed that Ms. Liu remained in a coma with a persistent fever. Dr. Xu Xuejun, the chief neurosurgeon at Chengdu Second People’s Hospital, noted that there have been cases where injuries caused by hair accessories like the shark clip have resulted in severe outcomes, even fatalities. He advised caution regarding the materials and situations in which these clips are used.
Reflecting on the incident, Mr. Hu recalled that on the night of September 21, they were on their way home after a dinner with friends. While riding on the back of the bike, Ms. Liu, in high spirits, suddenly hugged him, causing Mr. Hu to momentarily lose control, resulting in their fall. He only sustained minor injuries, but unfortunately, Ms. Liu’s head was severely injured, particularly where the sharp hair clip impacted.
Ms. Liu was quickly transported to the First People’s Hospital of Jintang County, where doctors confirmed she had suffered a serious brain injury and needed immediate surgery. Mr. Hu shared that she has undergone two craniotomies and remains in critical condition in the ICU.
According to visuals provided by Mr. Hu of the accident location, the area was straight and evenly paved. He emphasized that their speed was only about 20 km/h, suggesting that the hair clip played a significant role in the severity of her injury.
The hospital has informed Mr. Hu that Ms. Liu’s prognosis is serious. The medical expenses have already exceeded 100,000 yuan (approximately $14,000), with an estimated 300,000 yuan (around $42,000) still needed for ongoing treatment, a significant burden for someone who works in delivery services. Ms. Liu, the eldest of three siblings from a typical family, is now facing an unexpected crisis.
Desperate for her recovery, family and friends have started recording videos in hopes of reaching out to her and encouraging her to wake up. Mr. Hu expressed deep regret over the incident, stating, “She’s only 28. I will take care of her until she wakes up.”
Medical experts emphasize the need for caution when wearing hair claws. Dr. Xu explained that while the clips are designed to hold hair securely using a sharp, serrated grip, they can also inflict serious harm during accidents. The potential for skull fractures or severe brain injuries increases, especially in scenarios where the clip’s focal point lands on the occipital lobe, which is crucial for life functions.
He further suggested opting for alternatives to metal hair claws and advised against wearing them while driving, exercising, or in slippery environments. The recent incident serves as a sobering reminder of the hidden dangers of seemingly benign accessories.
