Typhoon -Tami- intensifies and cold air enters Guangdong. The lowest temperature in many places will drop to -1-
In an exclusive report from Yangcheng Evening News, reporter Liang Yitao shares insights on the evolving weather situation due to Typhoon “Tammy.” Originally a tropical depression east of the Philippines, it intensified into the 20th typhoon of the year early on October 22. Concurrently, a mild cold front began affecting Guangdong during the day.
The Guangdong meteorological department predicted that along with the temperature drop, the combination of “Tammy” and the cold air will lead to strong winds over the sea in the region. The meteorological bureau in Guangzhou has also warned that the city will experience increased wind strength due to the impact of both systems. Under the influence of these strong winds, many areas are expected to see minimum temperatures drop into the “teen” digits.
According to monitoring from the Central Meteorological Station, by 5 PM on October 22, “Tammy” was located approximately 550 kilometers east of Manila, in the Northwest Pacific, with maximum winds of 8 levels (18 m/s). The typhoon is forecasted to move northwest at about 15 km/h, gradually intensifying as it approaches the northeastern coast of Luzon in the Philippines. After passing over the northern part of the island, it is expected to enter the eastern South China Sea by the afternoon of October 24.
On October 22, the Guangdong meteorological department indicated that the sea temperatures along the anticipated path of “Tammy” are quite high, and the alignment of wind directions at both lower and upper levels is favorable for the typhoon’s intensification. Although a brief weakening is expected while it passes through the Philippines, its intensity is likely to strengthen thereafter, potentially reaching typhoon or strong typhoon levels (Category 13-14). However, there is uncertainty regarding the typhoon’s future path and strength due to possible adjustments in the steering high-pressure system and the cold air moving southward during its influence.
As for the specific weather outlook, the Guangdong meteorological department forecasts that on October 23, the province will experience sunny to partly cloudy conditions, with minimum temperatures in the northern areas like Zhaoqing and Shaoguan hovering around 15°C to 18°C. Coastal areas in the south will see temperatures between 21°C and 24°C, while the rest of Guangdong will range from 18°C to 21°C. From October 24 to 25, expect mostly sunny skies with temperatures in northern Guangdong, Zhaoqing, and Yunfu dropping to 14°C to 17°C, coastal areas seeing 20°C to 23°C, and other regions between 17°C and 20°C.
Specifically for Guangzhou, the forecast from the city’s meteorological station indicates that from October 23 to 24, the average daily temperature will decrease by 3°C to 5°C, with land gusts reaching 4 to 6 levels and stronger gusts in port areas and elevated regions of 6 to 8 levels. Looking ahead to October 25 to 27, the combination of Typhoon “Tammy’s” outer circulation and cold air will likely push land gusts up to 6 to 8 levels, with gusts in ports and highlands ranging from 7 to 9 levels, accompanied by sporadic rain. It’s anticipated that from October 23 to 29, daily highs will stay between 26°C and 29°C, while minimum temperatures on October 24, 25, and 29 will drop to 18°C to 19°C.
