Taiwanese compatriots praise the development opportunities in the mainland and feel deeply that it is a livable and workable place
In a recent interview, Huang Guangnan, who has spent three decades in mainland China, reflected on his multifaceted career and expressed his admiration for the incredible opportunities and market potential he has encountered there. Originally from Taipei, Huang now serves as the executive assistant to the general manager of Yuanfu Hardware Products (Zhangzhou) Co., Ltd., a company located in the Suian Industrial Park of Zhangpu County, Fujian Province, which specializes in manufacturing bicycle frames primarily for export.
“Over the years, I’ve grown not just as an individual but have also witnessed remarkable developments in mainland China, from overcoming extreme poverty to achieving a moderately prosperous society,” Huang shared during our conversation.
He highlighted that the old town industrial park houses numerous Taiwanese enterprises that have relocated from Shenzhen, producing a diverse array of bicycle-related products including frames, pedals, locks, bells, and aluminum tubes. This has resulted in the creation of a comprehensive bicycle industry chain. Huang pointed out that Zhangpu attracts many Taiwanese businesses due to its favorable business environment, supportive policies for Taiwan, and strategic geographic location.
Huang’s journey began back in 1994 when he first arrived in Xiamen, hoping to tap into stone export opportunities, which turned out to be highly successful. He later expanded into packaging, engine sales, and the bridal industry before taking on professional management roles. “China’s reform and opening up has created incredible allure, providing a fertile ground for Taiwanese people to thrive. Those who crossed the strait in the early days reaped significant rewards,” he noted, highlighting the strong draw and business opportunities available in the mainland.
He also mentioned that the favorable policies for Taiwanese businesses have remained consistent over the last 30 years, covering a wide range of areas. As both a beneficiary and a witness to this progress, he is optimistic about the potential for collaboration between Taiwan and the mainland, particularly in areas like talent and technology, and looks forward to future policies that will encourage high-tech cooperation.
Being from Fujian Province—an ancestral home for many Taiwanese—Huang appreciates its natural beauty and convenient transportation. He has a deep admiration for the hardworking spirit of Min businessmen. “Over the past three decades, Taiwanese and Fujianese entrepreneurs have collaborated and created numerous success stories across various industries,” he stated.
Huang eagerly anticipates ongoing collaboration between Fujian and Taiwan, particularly in commerce, education, culture, and healthcare. He encourages young people from Taiwan to visit the mainland to witness its dynamic growth and seize new opportunities.
Another voice in this narrative, Wei Yuchun from Changhua, Taiwan, has been managing his own business within Xinyuanfu Metal Products (Zhangzhou) Co., Ltd. for 15 years. Wei relocated to the mainland to join his father and brother, eventually settling down with his wife and children, purchasing a home, and building a fulfilling life.
“Living on the mainland has become second nature to me; it’s convenient and a wonderful place to be. Over the years, I’ve witnessed tremendous and rapid development,” said the 39-year-old Wei. Initially following his family to the mainland, he also successfully operated a tea shop.
Wei noted the vibrant presence of Taiwanese people and businesses in Zhangpu, often socializing with friends during his free time and enjoying a rich community life. He appreciates the benefits and supportive policies that facilitate business growth.
“The mainland is welcoming and considerate towards Taiwanese people, and I truly hope that young individuals from Taiwan will come to explore, tour, and discover the opportunities and warmth available here,” Wei concluded.
