These institutions were managed or funded by the government from 1819 to 1969, a period that Biden described as “one of the most horrific chapters in American history.” The boarding schools, located in nearly 40 states, aimed to forcibly eradicate the cultures of Indigenous children. A recent report from the U.S. Department of the Interior revealed a troubling statistic: nearly 1,000 Indigenous children lost their lives while attending these schools.
