ATMs in Brooklyn stores in Manhattan are frequently stolen, and police issue arrest warrants
In a recent announcement, the NYPD revealed that a group of at least two thieves has been actively targeting ATMs in Manhattan and Brooklyn over the past three months. According to police reports, these criminals have been making late-night visits to various businesses, including wine cellars, convenience stores, grocery stores, and pizza shops, dragging away entire ATMs or prying them open to steal cash. Business owners are feeling the financial strain from these brazen thefts.
The criminal activity has been traced back to the period between June 2 and September 20, during which the suspects typically operated under the cover of darkness. Incidents have been recorded as early as 8:15 PM and as late as 4:45 AM. While most of the crimes involved multiple suspects, there has been at least one instance where a lone thief, masked and wearing green gloves, managed to pull off a heist by himself.
Further details from the NYPD indicate that the thieves often gain entry through the front door or by prying open security gates. They then haul the ATMs to waiting vehicles, which have varied in make and model. One notable incident occurred on the night of September 20, when the suspects struck two stores in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint and East New York on the same evening.
While similar theft patterns have been observed in areas like Harlem and parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn has been particularly hard-hit. Neighborhoods such as Bedford-Stuyvesant, Williamsburg, Park Slope, Ocean Hill, Brownsville, and Clinton Hill have all reported instances of these thefts.
The NYPD is urging anyone with information or sightings of the suspects to contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at (800) 577-TIPS (8477), or visit their website at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com. Tips can also be submitted via text message to 274637 (CRIMES) by entering TIP577, or through Twitter by tagging @NYPDTips. The department assures that all information will be kept confidential.
